Common questions
Where do drain flies breed?
Organic build-up inside drains.
Why do they keep returning?
Moisture and food residue allow breeding.
When can people and pets go back in?
Stay away from treated areas for 1 hour. If you have a question about children, pets or health, call us and a technician will talk it through.
Are the small flies around my fruit bowl fruit flies?
Usually they're vinegar flies. They don't feed on the fruit itself, just the yeasts that grow on rotting fruit. The name fruit fly really belongs to a different group of flies.
Why do they seem to multiply so fast?
A vinegar fly's whole life cycle takes only a couple of weeks. House flies lay many hundreds of eggs.
Where flies breed, and what draws them in
Where they breed
- In rotting fruit. The larvae of vinegar flies feed on the bacteria and yeast found in it.
- In rubbish and other rotting material. House fly maggots develop in organic material.
What draws them in
- Rotting fruit left out. Vinegar flies are small, yellowish and red eyed, and are commonly seen around it.
- Garbage and sewage, which house flies pick things up from.
Keep them away
- Clean drains regularly
- Avoid leaving fruit exposed
